Our Dental Treatments

Below is a selection of the treatments that are provided at the clinic.

Smile Makeovers

Smile Makeovers

A smile makeover involves modifying an existing smile to improve the appearance. It is usually carried out to correct crowded teeth, close gaps, whiten, modify teeth length and width, reduce a gummy smile, reduce overjet, replace missing teeth or a combination of the said.

It involves an alteration to the upper eight or ten teeth and the lower teeth. The most frequent treatment method in a smile makeover is that involving the use of porcelain veneers as they are regarded as more conservative of tooth tissue and are strong and aesthetically pleasing.

Porcelain crowns, bridges, implants, implant retained dentures can also be used as part of a smile makeover, case dependent. Rapid orthodontics may be used to align teeth prior to the placement of porcelain veneers.

Cosmetic Veneers

Cosmetic Veneers

A veneer is a new front surface for a tooth, most commonly made form porcelain. Veneers are extremely versatile and can be used to align crowding or protruding teeth, close gaps or lighten tooth colour.

Dental porcelain veneers can be used to mask a single dark tooth but more often are used as part of smile makeover. At the Northern Smiles clinic our smile makeovers start at the consultation where we find out what patients don’t like about their teeth and what type of smile is required.

It usually involves a two stage process whereby the preparation of the teeth and impressions is undertaken. The impressions are sent to the dental laboratory and the shape and colour of the veneers are custom made specific to the requirement of our patients. The second appointment is the placement of the veneers and photographs are usually taken to show our patients before and after photos.

Cosmetic Crowns

Cosmetic Crowns

Dental Porcelain crowns are used to restore severely broken teeth. Our crowns are all made of porcelain, which like veneers, look as natural, leaving no dark line at the gum level as seen with some traditional crowns. Crowns are extremely versatile and can be used to align crowding or protruding teeth, close gaps or lighten tooth colour.

Dental porcelain crowns can be used to mask a single dark tooth but more often are used as part of smile makeover. At the Northern Smiles clinic our smile makeovers start at the consultation where we find out what patients don’t like about their teeth and what type of smile is required.

It usually involves a two stage process whereby the preparation of the teeth and impressions is undertaken. Any broken down teeth are built up first then the teeth are prepared. This process involves trimming back a layer from around the tooth to make room for the crown. Impressions are taken and temporary crowns are made before the crowns are made.

The impressions are sent to the dental laboratory and the shape and colour of the crowns are custom made specific to the requirement of our patients. The second appointment is the placement of the crowns and photographs are usually taken to show our patients before and after photos.

Porcelain crowns are then fitted at the second main treatment appointment. Our crowns are fitted with a multi-layer bonding system that bonds the crowns to the teeth with unparalleled strength. The crowns are polished and bite checked and then revealed to our patients. We also see our patients a few days later to check all is well when they’ve had some time to use them and eat with them.

Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges

When you have one or more missing teeth, then a dental bridge may be used to restore the resulting gaps. The dental bridge is a false tooth, created from porcelain that fills the gap and is supported by adjacent teeth or implants.

An important part in the placement of a dental bridge is to create the illusion that the missing tooth emerges from gum just as a natural tooth. Our skills in cosmetic dentistry, gum manipulation and our implantologist can combine to ensure no one will know that you ever had a missing tooth.

There are several types of bridge including traditional Fixed Dental Bridges, cantilever dental bridges, resin bonded dental bridges/Maryland bridges and implant supported dental bridges.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

At Northern Smiles, we offer two different forms of whitening procedures. Take home whitening and a combination of take home whitening and in surgery whitening.

Take home whitening

Our home whitening kit comes with custom made trays for accuracy and comfort of application. Gel is placed in the trays which are then worn for up to an hour a day.

Our specially designed trays are particularly effective at holding the whitening gel exactly where it needs to be to achieve the very best whitening results possible whilst preventing gel from leaking into the mouth. Excellent results are usually achieved in about 2 weeks. We supply plenty of gel to complete treatment and to maintain the results for months to come. Further gel can be supplied as required.

Take home and In surgery whitening Enlighten Whitening

Enlighten is a teeth whitening procedure to lighten the colour of your teeth using a combination of a carbamide peroxide gel at home and hydrogen peroxide gel in the surgery.

The combination of these gels produces maximum whitening results in the shortest possible time. The home stage lasts for two weeks, with the trays being worn every night. The trays are personally designed by our laboratory and are individually fitted to ensure maximum comfort. This stage gently prepares the tooth enamel so that the surgery stage can give a deep whitening that will give long term predictable results. The stronger surgery gel completes the process and gives phenomenal results. During the surgery procedure the gel will be applied to the front surfaces of your teeth, up to a maximum of three twenty minute sessions.

The difference with Enlighten is the results. Follow your dentists guidelines and teeth will whiten beyond any other system.

Cosmetic Fillings

Cosmetic Fillings

White Fillings

At the Northern Smiles clinic we have the experience and expertise to bring together the various advanced dental disciplines required to create white fillings that not only look natural but they function correctly and are durable.

Modern white fillings are a combination of a resin and nano-particles of glass. This combination gives white fillings their dental name; composite resins.

White Fillings can be used to restore cavities similar to silver fillings or replace old silver fillings for cosmetic purposes. The cosmetic appearance of white fillings being similar to that of a natural tooth is why they are becoming the popular choice for filling material for our patients . Many people are also concerned about the potential risks of mercury containing silver fillings.

At the Northern Smiles Clinic we advise that white fillings are best suited when the cavity/ filling to be replaced is small to medium in size. When a larger filling is required a porcelain inlay or porcelain onlay is a more durable option.

Porcelain inlays or porcelain onlays are fillings made of porcelain that fit into or onto the tooth. They are indicated when there is too little tooth structure to predictably support a white filling but there is enough tooth to avoid placing a crown, which is more destructive to the tooth.

Porcelain inlays / porcelain onlays take 2 visits to complete. The first session is when the decay or old filling is painlessly removed, a detailed impression is taken and a type of white filling is placed as a temporary. The second session is 1-2 weeks later when we bond the porcelain inlay or porcelain onlay, which fits exactly, to the tooth.

The advantage of porcelain inlays / porcelain onlays is that they durable than white fillings. Fillings often reduce the strength of a tooth but porcelain inlays / porcelain onlays can actually increase a tooth’s strength.

Air Flow Stain Remover

Air Flow Stain Remover

Our stain removal is a simple way to effectively remove surface stains from teeth. The system uses a focused jet of compressed air, water and bicarbonate particles to gently polish away surface staining from the teeth.

We offer a fantastic way to simply and effectively brighten your smile with stain removal. Stains that are removable include coffee, wine, tea and tobacco.

It will remove surface staining but will not lighten the base colour of the teeth. To achieve that, see ‘Teeth Whitening’.

The treatment lasts around 30 minutes, during which time the teeth will be cleaned with the jet. This may be combined with ultrasonic scaling for any tartar which may need to be removed. Anaesthetic is not required and the cleaning is pain-free.

The longevity of the results are dependent on your factors such as smoking, intake of tea/coffee, spicy foods and red wines. Most patients who choose Airflow Cleaning will have the procedure once or twice a year, and also just before any special occasions such as birthdays and weddings.

Adult Clear Braces

Adult Clear Braces

Straight teeth are becoming ever more popular amongst our adult patients. Clear and Ceramic Braces (Tooth coloured braces) are a low-visibility alternative to traditional metal braces. Ceramic braces have minimal visual impact and much less noticeable than metal braces, even up close. Clear and Ceramic braces are largely responsible for the increase in popularity of orthodontic treatment in teens and adults.

Patients who would prefer an orthodontic option that is completely invisible could consider one of the lingual brace systems such as Incognito. These braces are fitted to the inner surfaces of the teeth, next to the tongue.

Another option that is almost completely invisible might be one of the clear aligner systems such as Quick Straight Teeth and as the name suggests this involves tooth alignment in a short space of time often within three months.

Advantages of Clear and Ceramic Braces (Tooth Coloured Braces)

  • Low-visibility – This fixed brace system is far less obvious than metal braces. Even the wires can be coated to be tooth-coloured rather than just metal.
  • Efficient – Treatment times are just as quick as any other orthodontic option available. There is no compromise to treatment times with this option.
  • Value – This is the most cost-effective fixed brace appliance available.

Range of possible treatment

Ceramic braces can be used to treat all orthodontic problems from straightforward to very complex.

Treatment Time

Treatment times are low, with typical cases taking around 6-12 months but this does vary depending on the degree of complexity and amount of crowding. A more accurate estimation of treatment length is provided at the consultation.

How it works

Clear or Ceramic brackets are attached to the teeth. Flexible archwires are fitted into the brackets and slowly spread to a curved archform. This ‘elastic recoil’ gently pushes the teeth into proper alignment. The archwires are changed when needed throughout treatment. Additional forces can be created with clear elastic bands when required.

Bespoke Cosmetic Dentures

Bespoke Cosmetic Dentures

Tooth loss can occur for many reasons: gum disease, tooth decay or even trauma. Losing teeth reduces your ability to chew food properly or to smile with confidence. Excessive tooth loss can also make the face gaunt, your cheeks sag and appear older than you are.

Dentures have been used for years now to replace missing teeth and restore function.

Cosmetic dentures will fill out your mouth once again and restore your smile, as well as improving your confidence.

Botox And Dermal Fillers

Botox And Dermal Fillers

What is Botox?

An anti-wrinkle solution called Botox is injected in small quantities, which then blocks the nerve impulses to the facial muscles responsible for creating lines.

Botox also prevents new lines forming by relaxing the facial muscles and reducing excessive facial movements. The main cosmetic areas to benefit from this treatment are the areas between the eyebrows, the forehead lines and crows feet at the side of the eyes.

What are Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are anti-ageing injectable products based on hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin. Hyaluronic acid can absorb and retain more than 1,000 times its own weight in water.Used for

As hyaluronic acid depletes over time, filler injections replenish it where creases and lines appear. Dermal fillers can be used to fill lines, creases and wrinkles.

Hygienist and Fresh Breath Clinic

Hygienist and Fresh Breath Clinic

Dental hygiene is the cornerstone of good oral health and we actively encourage our patients to make use of our dental hygienists. Visiting a dental hygienist on a regular basis will not only reduce your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease, it will also ensure that your teeth appear bright, clean and mouth feeling fresh.

The hygienist’s main role is to professionally clean the teeth for the patient. This is usually called scaling and polishing and further deep gum cleaning. They also give advice on diet and preventing dental decay. The hygienist will work with your dentist to provide care tailored to your needs. We firmly believe that prevention is always better than cure, and regular hygiene visits are an essential part of this preventative approach.

A hygienist appointment typically includes:

  • Discussion about your symptoms
  • A basic periodontal examination
  • Scale and polish of your teeth
  • Advice about teeth cleaning and choosing oral hygiene products
  • Advice about diet and nutrition
  • Advice on giving up smoking where applicablerability.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants

Dental implants are regarded as the most advantageous solution to missing teeth. Implants are recommended in cases where a patient has lost teeth as a result of trauma or injury, decay or the ageing process. They can have positive implications on confidence and self-esteem, improving the function and aesthetics of the smile.

Implants can be used to replace single or multiple teeth, as well as to retain dentures. They are unique in design and can fit into small spaces and also where the bone is limited in both height and width.

If sufficient bone is available replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant has several advantages:

  • Teeth either side do not need to be drilled or undergo extra pressure
  • The surrounding bone is supported and prevented from further resorbtion
  • Implants are usually a longer lasting option
  • Implants usually are stronger and support the bite forces better
  • The don’t move around and interfere with speech like dentures

Multiple Tooth Implants

Multiple Tooth Implants

When several teeth are missing it can become difficult to chew properly. Replacing these teeth with dental implants can give the confidence to choose any type of food without worry of a moving denture or uncomfortable sensations.

Quite often if several teeth are missing in the same area a bridge can be firmly attached to the underlying implants as seen in the illustration above.

Implant Retained Dentures (Denture stabilisation)

Implant Retained Dentures (Denture stabilisation)

Say goodbye to denture adhesives, sore spots and embarrassing moments with implant retained dentures that have a bite comparable to natural teeth. With a more secure fit, you can talk, eat and laugh freely without having to worry about what your dentures are doing.

Dental Implants are used like natural tooth roots to support the dentures and hold them in place. Your complete dentures or partial dentures are attached to your new artificial roots, providing you with greater stability than ever before.

Advantages of implant retained dentures include:

  • A stable and secure fit of your dentures to your gums
  • Less denture base covering the roof of your mouth
  • Improved taste and speech with less denture base
  • A bite comparable to your own natural teeth
  • Restored chewing ability with greater enjoyment of food
  • Improved digestion and well being
  • No more pressure points or sore spots
